Various bass amps have tried to isolate dirt effects from the sub bass (traditional bi-amp rigs like Carvin RedEye), from bass cab tweeters (GK RB700/1001 series) or from both (SWR Mo' Bass head with Megagoliath cab).
Many bass-specific drive pedals will have a clean sub blend to keep the bass. One trick that might work well is to run your dirt pedals in parallel with a clean tone using something like the Boss LS2, possibly adding some crossover to isolate clean sub-bass and dirty mids or highs. Almost every bassist has experienced a nasal tone after using certain guitar dirt pedals. One problem you might be dealing with is the fact that guitar dirt pedals tend to have a high pass filter effect that cuts extreme low frequencies, which works really well cleaning out the mud from a guitar signal, but kills bass guitar tone. With moderate to high compression, I personally lose the connection between hiw hard I'm playing and the volume from my amp or monitor, which makes me feel like things have gotten quieter even if the dB are actually slightly higher with the compression. Otherwise, when you apply compression, you might find that it feels like the compressor reduces your volume, even with appropriate levels of make up gain. You can set up a compressor for a clean boost (Ratio = 1:1). I have the EQD Tone Job and I like it a lot: 3 band EQ with plenty of gain for clean boost.Ī compressor could do the job, but you also might find it frustrating.
